India Set to Unveil Its First Human-Powered Underwater Submersible This Year: Jitendra Singh

Jan 23 || TC – India is set to unveil its first Human Underwater Submersible (Deep-Sea Manned Vehicle) later this year, announced Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, on Thursday.

He made the announcement during the second meeting of the Mission Steering Committee for the "Deep Ocean Mission" at Prithvi Bhavan in New Delhi.

The success of this mission will position India as the sixth country with the technological capability to carry out such an ambitious project.

Dr. Singh mentioned that the initial submersible will operate at depths of up to 500 meters, with plans to achieve a depth of 6,000 meters by the following year.

The Minister highlighted that the Deep Ocean Mission, a flagship initiative, could unlock vast resources, including crucial minerals, rare metals, and previously unexplored marine biodiversity.

“This mission will not only explore the ocean depths but also help in building a strong blue economy that will shape India’s future,” Singh stated.

He emphasized that the entire project relies on indigenous technology, developed and manufactured entirely within India.

The mission also aims to deepen understanding of deep-sea ecosystems, contributing to the sustainable management of fisheries and biodiversity conservation.

Although the mission faced delays due to the COVID pandemic, Singh expressed confidence in the progress made, calling it a testament to India's determination and innovative capabilities.

The Minister further noted that the Deep Ocean Mission will align with the timelines of other major national missions, such as the Gaganyaan space mission.

Together, these projects will mark a significant milestone in India's journey towards scientific excellence, showcasing the nation’s advancements in both space and marine exploration.
